Stamford’s official holiday kickoff comes aptly named. The party gets underway on the 3rd at 5 PM, when one of the city’s loftiest buildings hosts the “Heights” portion of the proceedings. A gaggle of steely-nerved revelers—Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Dr. Seuss’s grumpy Grinch, and (just for good measure) the general manager of the New York Yankees, Brian Cashman—will rappel 22 stories down the Landmark Square high-rise to the oohs, aahs, and chuckles of the many assembled spectators below.
Have you ever seen old Saint Nick don rappelling gear and show off his utter lack of acrophobia (aka fear of heights—which, it must be said, would be a tricky phobia to manage given Santa’s airborne circuit on Christmas Eve)? Well, Heights & Lights gives you that unforgettable sight, a delight to young, old, and everyone in between.
“Lights”: The Lighting of the Holiday Tree (& More) at Latham Park
Once Santa, Rudolph, and the other rappellers have negotiated Landmark Square, the Heights & Lights festivities will journey up Bedford Street to Latham Park for the annual lighting of Stamford’s mighty Holiday Tree. That luminous event will be accompanied by loads of merrymaking and good cheer, including holiday music performed by the Aladdin Jr. Saxe Middle School’s 5th & 6th Grade Musical cast.
